Small Water Gems
Weather: Sunny Temp: 60° Ice thickness: 16 inches A few weeks ago, I reported on fishing small shallow lakes that previously winter killed and not to overlook them and study stocking reports from DNR. Well the lake I started fishing few weeks back, only had handful of people fishing. That's changed over the last few weeks as more and more people found out making it a circus out there. I love when someone says, “hey, lake X has a great bite going on”. Then you tell them it was

Finally, Lake Trout Time
For most of the winter, catching a lake trout (or several for that fact) has been very high on my want list. Ever since last winter and fighting with and pulling several great ones through the ice, I've been wanting to catch more. The fight of a Laker will make anyone want to catch more as nothing I've caught fights like them, I'm sure many others would agree with that statement. Fishing for them on Deerfield has not panned out yet, though I won't give up on trying to catch t

Nice Surprises
There are times that we go fishing with a mission, which we are going to be searching for a certain species for the day. The agenda for this trip was to find locations that the perch were occupying and get a plan together for an upcoming outing. Fortunately, I was finding plenty of locations that we were marking fish and they would come and investigate the presentation, but they definitely made it for a tough day of catching them. For the most part, presented them almost ever

Late Season Pheasant's
I didn’t get to enjoy much pheasant hunting this year, so I was fortunate enough to take my three labs, out for a day of chasing birds at Viking Valley Hunt Club, located in Ashby, MN. Yes, that’s right, I have three labs: Kati, my yellow will be 11; Mady, my black is 6 and Lucie, my chocolate is 2 years old, and yes, I hunt with them, most of the time all together. I can’t bring one out without the other knowing and putting up a fuss. This past Saturday was no different of m

Special Day on the Ice
I had arranged an ice fishing trip with, Black Hills Works, for a couple of guys and their supervisor to meet me up on Deerfield Reservoir for a day of fun on the ice last week. Black Hills Works is a community organization that provides special needs people in the area with opportunities to work, live and thrive through assistance programs and job training. It is a very special organization that I have enjoyed working with and it allows me to take a few of its members out ea

Smoked Lake trout…
While several species of fish become dormant in the dead of winter, the inverse is true when it comes to lake trout. Sunset Country has literally hundreds of lakes littered across the landscape that are home to the lake trout and January/February are excellent times to catch them. I recently made a trip with my dad and we were fortunate enough to put a couple nice trout on the ice. The only thing we enjoy more than a screaming drag, courtesy of the mighty Laker, is to enjoy
