Twin Ports Fishing Report

Brrrrr, here comes the cold...... Temps have finally come to the usual cold snap climate we are used to. This has definitely helped with the ice building on local waters, we will be driving trucks in no time. Most fishable waters are seeing ATV or Snow Machine traffic now, but continue to use caution.

Ice conditions have reached anywhere from 6" to 14" on area waters. The most dangerous spots continue to be shorelines and areas that harbor current. The St Louis river for example still has sketchy ice, and the USCG will continue to vacant the harbor areas with cutters to keep shipping channels open for a little while longer.

The reservoirs north of town are in decent shape now and fishing has been decent as well. Lake Superior is starting to show signs of ice, not here in Duluth/Superior, but in some spots like the McQuade Harbor North and over in areas of Chequamegon Bay to the Northeast on Wisconsin.

Fishing Report:

St Louis River continues to put out some fish. Most people are still fishing the harbor area, but we have been venturing out to new areas to avoid the crowds and it has paid off. Still fishing the shallow 5-10 feet of water using jigging spoons and puppet minnows.

Although walleyes have been most of our daily catch, we are also seeing a few pike, occasional pout and perch mixed in as well. The back bays of Kimballs, Pokegama, etc etc..have been slow, but some are finding crappies if they put in the time and effort to reach fishable waters.

The inland lakes continue to be the best bet for quantity of catches. Pike and bass are coming off of tip ups with sucker or shiner minnow rigs. Also seeing an occasional walleye as well. Gills and Crappies are still being caught using small tungsten jigs with soft plastics or wax worms.

Lake Superior is still very quiet, but we expect that to change as anglers are starting to adventure out onto the ice in certain areas (not the twin ports). Need extreme caution when deciding to fish the Gitch, so be very careful. Frankly, we do not recommend it and encourage waiting longer till we have better conditions. Should be rapid ice making temps from here on out, especially with this cold snap.
