Ice Season Preparation

Ice fishing season is right around the corner, so now is the time to start getting things ready for the first outing of the winter.

Getting your gear ready now, will ensure that everything is in working order when the season arrives. Winter is hard on the equipment, so make sure your rods and reels are in good working order and also spool up your reels with some new ice fishing line.

Now is the time to sort through your jigs, spoons, hooks and other terminal tackle for getting it organized and this allows you to decide what items you need to purchase.

I also make sure the auger has good shape blades, fill the auger with new fresh gas, start the auger and make sure it's operating properly. A poorly running auger can ruin a day of ice fishing real fast.

Whether you use a portable or permanent ice house, now is the time to make sure it’s ready for the season. Portable shacks should be set up and inspected for damage. Permanent houses should also be inspected. Make sure your bearing and tires are in good working order.

If you don’t have warm clothing, then it’s in your best interest to pick some up and don’t skimp on the quality. Some other items that anglers forget to check before the start of ice fishing, making sure that your batteries on your depth finder are charged and if they don’t hold a charge replace them.

Don’t forget forceps, pliers, minnow scoop and minnow bucket. Have fun this coming ice fishing season and don't forgot to practice CPR (catch, photo and release).
