Minnesota walleye opener is a weekend that most look forward to putting some gold in the boat. For me, it means our annual family trout fishing trip on LOTW.

With the late ice out this year, the water temperatures were well below usual for this trip. We had to scout out new waters. The trout chase the bait fish and with cold water, the bait was not yet shallow. We switched up our tactics and headed for deeper water.

We found the trout still in late ice mode. We picked up a few trolling deeper but found most of our success jigging structure adjacent to very deep water.

This weekend isn't about catching a ton of fish, but to get together with the family and get the kids excite
